RX Summer Skin Secrets: Richie L. Lin MD

Summer-Skin-Care-01

We all need to adapt our skin care routines during the hot, humid summers. Board certified dermatologist, Dr. Richie Lin is here to help. Here are a some of his top tips to maintain and protect summer skin:

1. We all sweat more during a sticky July day.  To keep your face looking fresh, your summer cleanser and moisturizer should be a touch more drying to control oil production. Look for cleansers that contain drying and acne fighting ingredients such as salicylic acid, and moisturizers that are lightweight.  For acne prone individuals, oil control for the rest of your skin is also important so be sure to use a body cleanser with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide.

2. No sunscreen is truly “waterproof” or “sweatproof,” since all sunblocks will dissolve in water eventually.  In fact, these labels will soon be a thing of the past since the FDA has ruled that only the term “water resistant,” with a time limit, can be used on a label.  If you are swimming, exercising, or even just sweating from a day of walking around, you should reapply your sunscreen every 1-2 hours for continued protection.

3. Sunscreens with an SPF below 15 do not protect against skin cancer or premature aging.  The FDA will now require these products to state that they only protect against sunburns, but not against the carcinogenic effects of the sun.  Make sure you pick a sunscreen with enough SPF.

4. Swim shirts and brimmed hats with UV protection are very popular right now.  You see every toddler and young child at the pool or beach wearing them.  If adults are mindful enough to protect their children from large doses of sun exposure, shouldn’t the same rules apply to big people?  Protecting yourself with a swim coverup that contains SPF and a wide brimmed hat means you will be stylish and safe at the beach!

5. During the summertime, sun spots can darken with sun exposure.  Being vigilant about sun protection and using a prescription strength lightening cream containing hydroquinone at night can help keep those sunspots light and your skin tone even.

Healthy Skin from Within: Nordic Naturals Complete Omega – 3.6.9

※※※

There are a million reasons to take an omega-3 supplement everyday. One of the many is that EFAs or essential fatty acids control a large number of cellular processes in the body that directly relate to the health of your skin, hair and nails. Before I get to that, let’s look at the numerous benefits of fish oil.

Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are considered “essential fats” because they are required for optimal health but cannot be produced by the body. EFAs can be found in fish, flaxseeds, walnuts and canola. Fish oil supplies the most beneficial omega-3s, which are: EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Eating actual fish (mostly oily, cold water fish like salmon, tuna, herring and sardines) is the best food source of EPA and DHA, but due to concerns about toxins such as mercury, a fish oil supplement is the safest source.

OMEGA-3:  EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid)

*Healthy heart and body*

  • Maintains a healthy heart and circulatory system
  • Enhances joint flexibility and movement
  • Promotes healthy immune function
  • Supports optimal metabolism and body composition
  • Promotes balanced blood sugar levels
  • Supports the body’s natural anti-inflammatory response

OMEGA-3:  DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid)

*Healthy mood, mind and memory*

  • Supports learning and memory
  • Promotes positive mood and well-being
  • Supports and protects the brain, eyes, nervous and immune systems
  • Essential for the proper development of infants and children
  • Recommended by physicians for pregnant and lactating women

OMEGA-6:  GLA (Gamma-Linolenic Acid)

*Healthy skin, hair and hormones*

  • Nourishes hair and skin
  • Supports healthy joints
  • Enhances Hormonal Balance
  • Maintains optimal body fat metabolism
  • Supports positive mood
  • Supports a regular menstrual cycle

OMEGA-9:  OA (Oleic Acid)

*Healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels*

  • Naturally occurs in fish oil
  • A “good for you: omega-9 monounsaturated fatty acid
  • Supports healthy blood vessel function
  • Promotes healthy cell membrane structure

Healthy Skin from Within:

Our skin cells need plenty of nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and healthy fats. Without these, our skin can become dry, dull, prone to premature aging and even inflamed. There are two key essential fatty acids that your skin and hair will love. Since your body doesn’t manufacture them, they must be sourced through food and/or supplements.

Omega-3s in fish oil have been shown to:

  • Keep the skin hydrated thus helping to prevent dry skin and other skin conditions
  • Help soothe scaly, rough skin by reducing unnecessary inflammation
  • Improve blood flow and support the elasticity of red blood cells thereby providing more oxygen to nourish the skin
  • Encourage the production of strong collagen and elastin fibers in the dermis making skin look younger by reducing wrinkling and sagging

GLA is an Omega-6 fatty acid that occurs naturally in evening primrose and borage oils and has shown to:

  • Relieve dry skin
  • Reduce hair loss
  • Provide relief for eczema, psoriasis and atopic dermatitis

Your skin is the largest organ in the body and allows approximately 60% of “what goes on it, to go inside it”. Anything that increases the body’s ability to maintain integrity in our highly polluted world is a plus for your beauty routine.

Nordic Naturals is the leading manufacturer of fish oil in the United States. They are committed to delivering the world’s safest, most effective omega oils. The Complete Omega – 3.6.9 is an omega-rich blend that contains all the needed ingredients to support heart health, brain function, positive mood, healthy joints, as well as healthy hair, skin and nails. It has a fresh lemon taste that ensures no fishy smell, taste or aftertaste and all research is based on third-party test results – resulting in an honest and pure product. You will not find a better fish oil than Nordic Naturals.

Nature’s Retinol: Philosophy Turbo Booster C Powder

✯✯✯

Philosophy Turbo Booster C Powder

Vitamin C is an effective weapon to fight the effects of premature aging. As we get older, the collagen in our skin diminishes resulting in a loss of firmness over time. Vitamin C aids in the growth and repair of skin tissues and is a powerful antioxidant that helps to ward off the effects of free-radicals.

Philosophy Turbo Booster C Powder is a topical vitamin C powder used to brighten skin tone and prevent premature aging. This 99.8% high-potency topical vitamin c powder can be used alone or mixed with your favorite moisterizer. Simply add one pump of moisterizer to the palm of your hand and one scoop of turbo booster c powder, mix and apply. You will immedietly see brighter and more even skin tone, smoother and healthier skin. Over time, reviews have shown a diminish of fine lines and dark spots, as well as an improvement in dark under-eye circles.

Also known as “natures retinol,” vitamin C is an easy and effective way to prevent premature aging.

Tried & Tested: Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush

✯✯✯

Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush

Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush is a nutrient-rich, fade-free, long-wearing cheek product.

The main ingredient, Amazonian clay, minimizes oil on the skin to keep the product in place. Its nutrient-rich formula, infused with Vitamins A, C and E fights free-radicals and protects from premature aging.

The Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush comes in an assortment of eight shades. From baby pink to strawberry red, the colors are strong and pigmented.  Some of the colors have a sparkly finish, while others take-on a more more matte finish. I have found that the matte finishes tend to be a bit chalky on the skin and prefer a more shimmery hue.

This blush is accurate in it’s 12-hour, long-wear promise. The color remained true throughout the day and survived in 75 degree heat.
